From Vine to Wine:

Dolomite's Role in Terroir Enhancement

Most of us enjoy a fine wine with a meal. But few of us understand the delicate and complicated journey that lovely glistening glass of wine has gone through to arrive with such elegance and taste on our table. And you might be fascinated to know that a rarely discussed mineral called dolomite is key to it all.

Dolomite, a naturally occurring mineral composed of calcium magnesium carbonate, plays a significant role in viticulture, from soil health to vine health, and through to the quality of wine produced. It has a significant influence on the sensory characteristics of wine, as well as contributing towards consistency and excellence.

Terroir is a term referring to the unique combination of factors that influence the characteristics of wine – and dolomite is a key factor in the enhancement of terroir. Utilising dolomite as part of a comprehensive soil management strategy leads to higher quality wines and a more pronounced expression of terroir.

The role of dolomite in soil health

  • Dolomite is widely used to correct soil acidity. Many grapevines thrive in slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Dolomite neutralises soil acidity, providing a more favourable environment for vine roots to absorb essential nutrients.
  • In addition, dolomite serves as a source of calcium and magnesium, two crucial nutrients for vine health. Calcium strengthens cell walls, aiding in disease resistance and improving the structural integrity of grapes. Magnesium is a key component of chlorophyll, essential for photosynthesis and the production of energy required for healthy growth and good fruit quality.
  • Dolomite improves soil structure by enhancing soil aggregation. Better soil structure increases aeration and water infiltration, reducing the risk of soil compaction and erosion. In this way, an optimal environment for root development and microbial activity is created.
  • It follows that balanced soil pH and improved soil structure promotes robust root growth. Strong root systems enhance the vine's ability to access water and nutrients, particularly in deeper layers of soil.
  • Dolomite, through its ability to regulate soil pH, ensures that nutrients are readily available to vines. Balanced nutrient uptake is crucial for producing grapes with the desired composition of sugars, acids, and phenolic compounds, thus impacting flavour, aroma, and colour of the wine.
  • Calcium and magnesium influence the mineral content of grapes, contributing to the complexity of the wine produced. Wines from vineyards with optimal mineral balance often exhibit distinctive and desirable qualities.
  • Consistency in grape quality across different vintages is achieved through the use of dolomite. Reliable grape quality leads to more predictable winemaking results, thus enhancing the overall brand value.

The role of dolomite in terroir enhancement

Terroir encompasses the range of environmental factors that influence the characteristics of wine, including soil, climate, topography, and human intervention. The varied and unique combinations of these factors gives each wine its distinct identity.

Dolomite, as part of good soil management, plays a critical role in shaping terroir. Healthy soil, as we know, depends on diverse microbial communities, which play a crucial role in nutrient cycling and disease suppression, providing resilience to vines despite environmental stresses.

So be sure to raise your next glass of wine with pleasure, appreciation for its distinctive taste – and respect for its complex journey to your dining table.
